It’s a bit disappointing to see the lack of native 1080p resolution, but DICE seems to have locked in performance or at the very least, it’s pretty close to where it needs to be.

So yes, the PS4 version runs at 900p and the Xbox One version stays at 720p. In fact, they operate at the same level as Battlefield 4 ran over two years ago. However, just like Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline and Star Wars: Battlefront, none of the console versions work at native 1920 X 1080p resolution. It’s not a 60fps locked experience, mind you, but for a beta it’s a good sign that the retail version can deliver a solid 60fps experience. Regardless, the console versions are targeting 60fps and it looks like for the most part the PS4 and Xbox One versions are indeed working pretty close to that. It’s a nice touch although we would have liked to see a few more options such as motion blur. But as usual, before we move forward, we have to point out that this is a beta and things may always change in the final retail version.įor starters, the console versions have a field of view selector that you can use to adjust the view of the player.

We recently got our hands on the near beta Mirror’s Edge: catalyst on the PS4, Xbox One and PC versions and we were able to analyze the performance of the game on each of them. Presented as a reboot, Catalyst runs on the latest version of DICE’s FrostBite engine, a set of tools and frameworks that power visually stunning games like Star Wars: Battlefront on all modern platforms. Major landmarks, like the Shard, would probably be noticeably absent from reflections. After 8 long years, Faith will finally come back to Mirror edge catalyst this june. Since MEC has a lot of reflective, vertical surfaces this effect would be quite noticeable. If something offscreen is culled, it naturally can't be in a reflection.

From what I understood from the conference there is a lot of tuning required to make materials look right, and this is probably easier to do during a game's production (as assets are produced) than retroactively.įinally, and most importantly, EA doesn't care about MEC.īeside the point games typically cull anything that is not inside the player's field of vision. Secondly, even if the tech was added, it is not as simple as just turning RTX on. I imagine that there is an ton of work that needs to be put in to implement it correctly.įirstly, on a technical level, MEC is on an older version of the Frostbite engine so the tech simply isn't there. I'd buy one of the new GPUs in a heartbeat if they added it, but sadly it's extremely unlikely it will happen.
